Overview

This amazing trip begins from Delhi, the capital city of India. It includes the Taj Mahal, which is one of the eight wonders of the modern world. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. Visit the major Rajasthani principalities and townships, sleep in a palace or castle turned into hotels, dine on the royal Rajasthani meals, and enjoy the colorful folk dances.

Rajasthan, as the name suggests is the land of Maharajas, meaning the King of Kings. Amazing legends of heroism and romance still resound from its equally amazing architecture that still stands to narrate its tale of a bygone era. The stories about their courage and bravery, the heroism and rivalry, the queens and concubines are still told. The magic of Rajasthan is unequalled in the world for its heritage, culture, safaris, sand dunes, and lush green forests full of wildlife. Rajasthan is often expressed as a huge open-air museum with many relics that are well preserved for the new generations and its visitors.

Day 02~Explore attractions of Delhi

After breakfast, with our guide and driver, you will set out to explore the attractions of Delhi. We first visit Old Delhi which is the former center of Mughal power offering ancient monuments, narrow streets, and bustling markets. Begin from Raj Ghat which is a shrine built in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi who is considered to be the father of India. Continue on to the Red Fort which was built in 1648 by the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who is famous for his great edifice of love, the Taj Mahal. Also, see the biggest mosque in India the Jama Masjid, constructed by Shah Jahan in 1658 and can accommodate 20,000 devotees at one time. You will take cycle-rickshaw ride through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk to see the vibrant markets.

In the afternoon, we visit Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, situated in the heart of New Delhi's Connaught Place area. It is one of the most important Sikh temples. Originally the bungalow of Raja Jai Singh of the 17th century, the Gurdwara and its pool (also called Sarovar) are now a place of great worship for Sikhs. Next we visit the Laxmi Narayan Temple dedicated to Lord Bishnu. As the temple was built by the industrialist J.K. Birla, the temple is also famously known as Birla Temple and it's the first major Hindu Temple that allows admission to the so called "untouchable" class of people.

The last stop of the day will be at Akshardham Temple Complex which is the latest addition to the architectures of Delhi, opened in 2005. The complex features a pavilion for cleansing ritual, a water show, a thematic garden, three exhibitions and the main temple which rises 141-foot high, spans 316-foot wide, and extends 356-foot long. Intricately carved with flora, fauna, dancers, musicians, and deities, the temple is an extravaganza work of 7000 artisans and 3000 volunteers!

Tonight, you are invited for an Indian welcome dinner.

Day 04~Drive from Agra to Jaipur

 (160 miles, 5-6 hours)

A long day today; so we have an early start.

We will travel via Fatehpur Sikri-the abandoned capital of India that lies 25 miles before Agra. Built by the Great Mughal Emperor Akbar during 1570 and 1585, the citadel is one of the finest examples of the culmination of Hindu and Muslim architecture. Shortly after its completion, as the small, spring-fed lake that supplied the city with water dried, and probably its border with the Rajputana areas in the North-West, which were increasingly in chaos, the emperor abandoned Fatehpur Sikri, moving his capital to Lahore, currently in Pakistan.

About 60 miles before Jaipur city, we will take a detour of Chand Bawri-an ancient step well, built in between 800 and 900 A.D. The land of Rajasthan is extremely dry and drinking water was always scarce. So, the king Chanda ordered the construction of the step well that could conserve water as much as possible for his people. The step well consists of 3,500 narrow steps over 13 stories and extends 100 ft. deep into the ground. It's one of the most fascinating architecture of India and worth visiting.

Check into your hotel and take rest for the balance of the day.

Overnight: Rajputana Sheraton or similar 5*

Day 05~Explore Jaipur

Begin the morning with an excursion to the Amber Fort. From the base of the fort, we will switch to a locally available 4WD jeep to ferry us to the top of fort. Optional: you may take an elephant ride (subject to availability and costs about $15) to the top with pride, like the Maharajas did back in their time. Amber Fort -the residence of Rajput Maharajas and their families is known for its artistic Hindu style elements with its large ramparts and series of gates and stone-paved paths. This massive structure that dominates Jaipur's skyline is constructed of red sandstone and marble.

Next, we will visit Hawa Mahal, the most well-known landmark of Jaipur which is not really a palace but a sandstone screen from where the ladies of the court could watch the proceedings on the road below without being seen. Our next stop is at the City Palace-situated in the heart of the city. It's a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. The place is now a museum except for one section where the royal family still resides.

Nearby is the Jantar Mantar, only one of the five observatories constructed by Jai Singh that shows his passion for astronomy. The Central Museum situated in the Ram Niwas Gardens, has a large collection of costumes, woodwork, brassware, jewelry and pottery.

Jag Niwas- the former summer residence of the Prince of Mewar, today has been transformed into a magnificent luxury hotel.
